Know your rights so you can defend yourself from a deportation
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), presents its second Know Your Rights film; “America; I Too”, starring Academy Award nominee Barkhad Abdi. Closed captioning available in Spanish, Korean, and simple Chinese.
What to do if an immigration agent knocks on your door
Don’t open the door
Immigration agents cannot come in without a signed warrant by a criminal court judge. They can only come in if you let them.
ICE can use anything you say against you in your immigration case, so claim your right to remain silent!
Do not sign
Don’t sign anything ICE gives you without talking to an attorney.
Report and record
Take pictures and video unless you’re on federal government property. Take notes of badge numbers, number of agents, time, type of car, and exactly what happened!
Don’t show any documents
..unless it’s a letter from your attorney. Do not show any false documents.
Make a plan
Be ready before you ever come into contact with immigration officials. Use this toolkit (opens a DPF document) to create a family plan for an encounter with immigration.
