Forming healthy communities in the Rio Grande Valley

In 2010, LUPE was awarded a grant from theRobert Woods Johnson Foundation to combat childhood obesity in the Rio Grande Valley.

Our members have worked toward streetlights since 2005. Yet after passing two pieces of legislation at the state level with the help of former State Representative Veronica Gonzales, at the beginning of 2011 we still had not gained a single colonia receiving streetlights. That year we received funding from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundationto combat childhood obesity in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Communities Creating Healthy Environments (CCHE) initiative guided us through our campaign to light the first 13 colonias, which received solar powered streetlights in 2012. Without the funding, strategic coaching and technical assistance provided by the CCHE initiative, our members would not have gained as many colonias receiving streetlights in such a short period of time.
