Job Description

The Community Organizer in Mercedes, Texas conducts personal visits and house meetings with community members, educates workers and families on the benefits of building a community organization, identifies community leaders and sets up community based committees. Trains and develops community committees on choosing and implementing programs for community change. Community Organizer works with community committees, supporters and leaders to build support for LUPE programs. The Community Organizer reports directly to the Community Organizing Coordinator.

Qualifications

Two years of college in addition to experience working with the public and fundraising for specific events with a minimum of two (2) years significant and progressively responsible experience organizing, building committees, identifying and developing leadership, and planning and executing campaigns are required. The ideal candidate would exhibit interest in working with the low income and undocumented population in the Rio Grande Valley.

LUPE seeks applicants who are fully bilingual in English and Spanish College degree required in Communications, Public Relations or related field. A minimum of two years of significant and progressively responsible experience organizing, building committees, identifying and developing leadership, and planning and executing campaigns are required.  Commitment to the mission and ideals of the Farm Workers Movement/ Latino issues are essential and must exhibit interest in working with the low income and undocumented population in the Rio Grande Valley. A strong work ethic and excellent presentational and interpersonal skills are need. The ideal candidate would exhibit interest in working with the low income and undocumented population in the Rio Grande Valley.

La Unión del Pueblo Entero was founded by labor rights activist César Chávez.  LUPE builds stronger, healthier communities to enable colonia residents to use the power of civic engagement for social change.  We provide leadership development for community leaders to mobilize residents and offer social services to help families address their immediate needs as they work for social change. Over the last several years, LUPE has created a membership base of 7,000+ people in Rio Grande Valley. Thousands of these members have been assisted by LUPE’s social service providers and staff attorney with income tax and immigration related services. Additionally, LUPE organizers have trained over 250 colonia leaders who have organized house meetings to engage neighbor families on issues that affect their communities, developed advocacy campaigns, and articulated these issues to the media.  LUPE organizers actively work with colonia residents to develop campaigns for immigrant and neighborhood rights.
