Over the past few weeks; tensions have escalated all around the South Texas area with protests and marches resisting the separations of families happening along the US/Mexico border. In solidarity with the 2400 children who have been separated, La Union Del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) rallied supporters from across the nation to organize a non-violent fast and prayer chain, #BreakBreadNotFamilies, as a way to protest injustices from the administration.

The rally at Archer Park in McAllen, Texas was a great success; there was a sense of solidarity and tranquility. As you arrived at the park, people with blue and red shirts from different organizations started to fill up the surrounding area of the gazebo. Residents also participated to show support; they smiled at each other as if they knew they were allies.

At Archer Park, Kerry Kennedy, daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, joined labor activist Dolores Huerta to announce the #BreakBreadNotFamilies, a 24 day, 24 hours fast and prayer chain, that honors the 2,400 plus children separated from their parents by Trump’s zero-tolerance policy. And at the same time demand the government to stop hurting the immigrant communities.

Dolores Huerta at the event said, ”Someone said to me, is this gonna make any difference? I answered this is the only thing that makes a difference. Cuando el pueblo está Unido, Cuando el pueblo se levanta, Cuando el pueblo se une en el ayuno, va a ser la diferencia nacional y internacionalmente.”

Since the “zero tolerance” policy that took effect two months ago, the federal government has separated children and parents accused of entering the U.S. illegally. The administration is putting families in cages as the solution, but in reality, it’s not. It only causes trauma and health problems. And lately local and state advocacy groups have joined forces to withstand these policies.

“Reunify these families now,” Kerry Kennedy told a crowd of protesters from the Rio Grande Valley, Austin, Houston, San Antonio and Dallas area. She called on lawmakers to “end this humanitarian crisis of their own making.”
