Join us as we tell VP Mike Pence to end the cruelty of immigration detention camps

This week, Vice President Mike Pence will be visiting McAllen, TX the same day people throughout the nation will hold vigils and protests to shine a light on the horrific abuses of the Trump administration in human detention camps.

Let’s hold VP Pence accountable for the horrid conditions children and families face in immigration jails and detention camps. Join us this Friday at 9 am at the Ursula detention center in McAllen as we demand that the abuse stops.

This administration continues rejecting its humanitarian responsibilities, and instead uses children and other vulnerable people to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis at the southern border for political gain. It’s a cynical strategy to push for more money and more legal authority to cage families and children, exclude asylum seekers, and build wasteful and damaging border walls.

The administration worsens the humanitarian crisis through its policies that use cruelty and horrid conditions to punish the fundamental human experience of moving in search of rights and a better future.

If we truly believe that all people are endowed with the unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, then that is true regardless of where you were born, the color of your skin, or how you got here. Locking people up cannot be our default response to people who migrate in pursuit of rights and opportunity. We know from our history what happens when a government targets, dehumanizes and strips an entire group of people of their civil and human rights.

The time is now for a humanitarian response to humanitarian need. We need to mobilize humanitarian aid and get Border Patrol out of the way. We must put the necessary resources in place to efficiently process arriving immigrants and connect them with family and other sponsors quickly and safely.

How we treat people at the border today will define who we are as a country for generations to come. We can all play a role to welcome newcomers and defend the rights of visitor and resident alike.

Join the vigil this Friday.
