The invited speakers at La Union del Pueblo Entero'4th Biennial Gala, that took place on Friday, October 11 in Edinburg, tied together the legacy of Cesar Chavez and the Farm Worker Movement with the current movement for immigrant human rights.

Farm worker movement leaders Rebecca Flores and Pablo Chavez will tie together the farm worker movement legacy with current immigrant rights organizing at LUPE's 4th biennial gala, this October 11th, 2019.

From farm worker organizing to immigrant human rights

Rebecca Flores received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her leadership of the United Farm Workers in Texas and her current human rights work. Rebecca spoke on the injustices of the Migrant Protections Protocols and her current work defending the human rights of refugee mothers and children.

Rebecca Flores was trained in the house meeting model of community and labor organizing by Cesar Chavez and Fred Ross before bringing the model to Texas' colonias. LUPE continues this model, which serves as the basis for our campaigns to win improvements in the colonias and just immigration and border policies. Colonia residents organized with LUPE are fighting back against Trump's cruel border policies by mounting a humanitarian response.

Cesar Chavez's legacy beyond the fields

The keynote address was delivered by Pablo Chavez, president and chairman of the Cesar Chavez Foundation. One of eight children of Cesar and Helen Chavez, Paul has spent his entire life with the farm worker movement. At the helm of the Cesar Chavez Foundation, he has kept the legacy of his father alive through social enterprises that provide support to hundreds of thousands of Latino working families.

LUPE's 4th biennial gala took place Friday, October 11, 2019, at Mayrin Banquet Hall in Edinburg. The event's theme was “We Are Stronger Than Fear” and highlighted the ways that border communities are defending the human dignity of migrants and border residents amid attacks by the Trump Administration.
