Although a severe cold front chilled most of the country on the dawn of January 20th, 2025, La Union del Pueblo Entero was in the heat of a demonstration to protest the presidential inauguration and show solidarity with our communities under attack. As our country was getting ready for the start of the second term of the Trump administration, our community, staff, LUPE members, and multiple partner organizations prepared to face the uncertainty ahead of us in unity. Many supporters of the cause joined our march in a show of solidarity and defiance against those who seek to divide our community, incite fear, and strip us of our fundamental human rights.
The event started at McAllen Municipal Park. The first people to arrive brought flags, banners, and posters to spare. Many community members would soon show up and pick one for themselves if they didn’t already have one. Once enough people arrived, LUPE’s Executive Director, Tania A. Chavez Camacho, grabbed a megaphone and spoke to the crowd. She thanked everyone for their participation and shared words of motivation that inspired those in attendance to start the march to Archer Park.
The march advanced southbound while a multitude of people continued chanting and waving flags under the banner of our campaign, “Movimiento Resistencia – Aqui Estamos y No Nos Vamos.” When the march arrived at its final destination, LUPE staff, members, and fellow changemakers from our partner organizations, South Texans for Reproductive Justice and Sidewalk School, touched on and reminded the community of some of the issues we're fighting for; from reproductive rights, to LGBTQ+ and Trans visibility, and immigration reform— the importance of our shared struggled and intertwined liberation was echoed through the words and voices of community members for all to hear.
We hope you can join us at future events, continue to support the fight for justice, and ensure that every person is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Throughout the year and beyond, we will have opportunities for the community to get involved and be a part of the solution. Whether it's volunteering to become a Know Your Rights trainer or joining us at the Capitol to testify during the 2025 Legislative session, you can sign up to get involved today using this link. www.lupenet.org/movimiento.
