COLONIA SAN CLEMENTE CELEBRATE PUBLIC LIGHT WIN |
If you recall, our Newsletter covered the story of Colonia San Clemente residents whom after their organizing efforts and 11 long years of living in darkness, the community is was able to obtain public lighting in their Colonia. Earlier this week, as tradition has it, Colonia members gathered at colonia leader, Laura Camacho's house for a potluck celebration where they celebrated the fruits of their labor alongside community organizer, Marcela Alejandre, who's encouragement and guidance helped San Clemente vecinxs. As dusk neared, the streets of San Clemente lit up and members cheered and gathered for pictures to commemorate their efforts. A reminder that Colonia San Clemente joins the many colonias in the RGV that LUPE has helped organize for the betterment of their Colonia. |

COLONIA CARDINAL HOSTS COMMUNITY CELEBRATION |
A couple miles away another celebration was taking place at community leader Imelda Maldonado's home.
Together Imelda and her vecinas opened their doors to our dedicated Alton Organizer, Francisca, who for years has helped the Colonia host their first Junta Casera and guided their organizing efforts. Also present was Precinct 3 Commissioner, Everardo and the Methodist Healthcare Ministries who were there to show their support.
Our members reflected on their organizing efforts over the last year and recalled the immense happiness that overcame them when they learned that their colonia had made the list to receive public lighting earlier this year. Following the several crimes that took place in the darkness for more than 15 years, the colonia can now rest easy knowing that they will have public lighting to keep them safe. |

FUND TEXAS FOREVER: SIGN THE PETITION |
Following the devastating floods that took place over the Summer across Texas, community members are gathering across counties to prevent another fatal flood. Through virtual meetings and countywide organizing efforts, LUPE is demanding Gov. Abbott to approve the Forever Fund into law, which would allocate $500M to disaster relief fund for communities like Travis County and Cameron County who are still reeling from the effects of the devastating floods. However, as you all well know, recovery from a climate disaster is a long road and requires more than donations of individual assistance or small scale government help. We are almost at our goal of 500 signatures–help us reach our goal by signing our petition today! |
