Release: Colonia Salida Del Sol Phase 6 Celebrates Community Victory: New Public Lighting Secured Through Collective Action

April 1, 2024

On April 1st, 2024, residents of Colonia Salida Del Sol Phase 6 and LUPE members celebrate their hard-won victory in securing newly placed light posts, which illuminate their streets and symbolize the power of community unity and determination.

What: Not far from another colonia where public lighting had recently been installed, Colonia Salida Del Sol Phase 6 residents were inspired and determined to bring light to their streets as well. Their journey began with a simple question: ‘Why can’t we have light too?‘ Through grassroots efforts and collaboration with LUPE, facilitated by community organizer Marco Lopez, the residents embarked on a mission to illuminate their neighborhood. Following numerous neighborhood meetings and the submission of a petition in May of 2023, their advocacy saw results on March 7th, 2024, when the first street lights lit up. Now, streets once shrouded in darkness are a safer environment for families and children to thrive. To celebrate this milestone, a gathering will take place on April 1st, 2024, to commemorate the installation of the new public lighting.

When: Monday, April 1st, 2024, starting at 6:00 PM CDT

Where:  39408 Circle 6 St North, Penitas, TX, 78576

Who: La Unión Del Pueblo Entero members, Colonia Salida Del Sol Phase 6 Residents, and Hidalgo County Pct. 3 Commissioner Everardo Villarreal.

Visuals: Colonia Salida Del Sol Phase 6 families will host a community barbecue, accompanied by remarks from residents and Commissioner Everardo. The celebration will conclude with a cake-cutting ceremony.
