dREAMER LEGISLATION UPDATES
Passed in 2001 by the Texas Legislature, the Texas Dream Act grants U.S.-raised students the opportunity to pursue their dreams by providing pathways to higher education. On June 4th, that promise was broken. In a decision made by the Texas Governor and Attorney General, access to in-state tuition was stripped away from thousands of immigrant youth–and with it their dreams. Many of these students have lived in Texas a majority of their lives, attended public schools, and have worked tirelessly to contribute to our communities. This decision is a betrayal on behalf of our government and goes against the values Texas claims to uphold: hard work, opportunity, and community. We cannot turn our backs on students who have long persisted through a system that was never built for them, navigating challenges like expensive immigration processing fees, job insecurity, and now barriers to education.
