Our founder, Cesar Chavez, said, “It is not enough to teach our young people to be successful…so they can realize their ambitions, so they can earn good livings, so they can accumulate the material things that this society bestows. Those are worthwhile goals. But it is not enough to progress as individuals while our friends and neighbors are left behind.”
That spirit of team work and mutual aid is one of the values that LUPE was founded by. And it was that spirit that won Deferred Action, when thousands of youth organized and called on President Obama to stop deporting immigrant youth. Through petitions and protests, press conferences and phone banks, youth throughout the nation put pressure on the president to stop separating dreamers from their families and removing youth from the only country they call home.
Now we have to keep organizing if we want to protect this benefit and win additional gains for our brothers and sisters, moms and dads.
That’s why we are building our Youth Organizing Team. We want to know the issues that immigrant youth in the RGV care about so we can connect you with opportunities to work toward becoming a youth leader and creating change in your community.
Youth have always been at the forefront of movements for equality and progressive change. From the UFW and the grape boycott, to the Student/Farmworker Alliance and the Taco Bell boycott. From the Civil Rights Movement to the movement for access to health care. Youth have pushed movements to be more creative and energetic, and have played a big role in bringing long-lasting change.
Here at LUPE, youth have always been an important part of our organization. And now with Deferred Action, we have a unique opportunity to create a strong youth program that allows immigrant youth to become strong community leaders and bring even bigger change to your communities.
