La Union del Pueblo Entero, on behalf of over 7,000 RGV community members who support comprehensive immigration reform, condemns remarks from House Speaker John Boehner yesterday that slammed the door shut on comprehensive immigration reform this year.
Juanita Valdez-Cox, Executive Director of La Union del Pueblo Entero, says, “Speaker Boehner and Republican Party leadership continue to treat Latino Americans as second class citizens, as though the needs of our communities come after the needs of their party, as though the crisis facing our families can wait until the whole of the Republican Party is in agreement that something needs to be done to keep our families together. The Speaker knows full well that a path to citizenship has a majority support among Americans and among Congressmen and Congresswomen. Yet he refuses to come to the table. The speaker needs to act now or Latinos will remember in November.”
Speaker Boehner and the House leadership should be working non-stop and doing everything they can to stop the 1,120 families that are torn apart each day, as a result of our broken immigration system. If Speaker Boehner and Republican Party leadership do not act on comprehensive immigration reform, the only major action by the Republican-controlled House on immigration this year will have been the vote in June to defund Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the Obama administration program that defers deportations of young undocumented immigrants.
There is more than enough time for Speaker Boehner to bring a vote to the House floor this year. There is a bipartisan majority ready to vote and pass immigration reform that puts all 11 million aspiring Americans on a path to citizenship and end our immigration crisis once and for all.
