Census Self-Response Kicks Off in the RGV with Census-Themed Health Fair
Census representatives will join LUPE for first event of self-response period in the RGV
Are you ready to be counted in the 2020 Census? Your first opportunity is right around the corner and La Unión del Pueblo Entero is here to help.
March 12th marks the beginning of the self-response period of the 2020 Census. The first event of the self-response period in the Rio Grande Valley will be Tu Salud Cuenta—¡Cuéntate!, a Census-themed heath and information fair taking place at 10 am at LUPE's San Juan office, located at 1601 US-83 Bus, San Juan, Texas.
At 10:15 am, we will kick off the event with a short press conference, where Dr. Mary Jane Garza, Census Partnership Coordinator, will address attendees and the media on the importance of the Census, how to respond and the Census questionnaire. Next, Martha Sanchez, LUPE's community organizing coordinator, will speak on the various ways the RGV's immigrant and low-income communities have been preparing to be counted. The press conference will be followed by media availability with Dr Garza and Ms Sanchez.
During the event, which runs from 10 am to 2 pm, residents will receive assistance filling out their Census form from U.S. Census Bureau workers. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own devices, and LUPE will have devises available.
The event will also feature a health talk on the importance of knowing your vital numbers as well as free health checks, including blood pressure, glucose, and diabetes screenings.
“Now is the time to fill out your Census questionnaire,” said Martha Sanchez. “We have been preparing for this moment for a year and now it is go time. As a trusted voice in the community, LUPE can help. We are inviting residents to bring their questions and their Census mailings with them to our Census kick-off event. Come and speak to Census workers, who can assist you in filling out your Census form.”
As the biggest nonprofit organization serving immigrant and colonia communities of the Rio Grande Valley, LUPE's reach and ability to inspire trust in the Census process is unparalleled. Through Census-themed events, neighborhood house meetings, visits with residents at their doors, and our popular Censo Lote game, LUPE is inspiring our neighbors in hard-to-count areas to stand up for their families and their communities and be counted in the 2020 Census.
